As I have a week off from work I decided I'd try to tart up the ratty 81 Corvette a bit.  As it's a daily driver my plan is to do it up a panel at a time.  Thusly I took the bonnet off yesterday to start there.

This whole car got a cheap, nasty respray at some point and the clearcoat didn't adhere properly.  A lot of it just flakes off but some places adhere.  I spent the morning with a razorblade flaking 90% off the bonnet.

That's gonna make the rest of the car a bugger!

Pics as I progress are going here:

Going to do everything yourself Steve?

I can imagine it being a b**** having to strip a GRP body.
Can't use paint stripper cause it will get into the glassfibre, have to be carefull not making low spots when sanding, etc.

Good luck!

Here's what I did this morning.  Bonnet in Primer ready for a knockdown and spray in White.  There's a million chores on the list for tomorrow so I don't know if I'll get any further until maybe Tuesday...

This was a trial to see what's ahead.  The front half of the car is all loose fluffy clearcoat which is going to be labour intensive.  The rear is mostly tight and shiny so may just need a good scuffing.  We'll see.

I have to do it all myself because of the exorbitant cost of professionals.

Oh Matt, I wish that were true.  Look at the latest Photobucket postings.  I'm flaking paint from the nearside wing except for where every now and then they got it right and it's a homogenous structure.  The sanding is going to be a torment and I have to do it before I put that bonnet back on.

But then, deep breath, the point of this excercise was to do it in achievable portions so theoretically it's OK to chip the new bonnet paint taking it on and off cuz it's STILL better than what I had?

I won't actually believe that until the first chip...

Bloody 'ell,

Just spent the morning buying supplies to continue painting on the Corvette.  I already have a gallon of superb Glasurit Primer/filler so I had to get more hardener and reducer for that.  Gulp!

Thern on to get the enamel which was half the Glasurit expense.  As I left the second store I joked to the vendor that if I stopped for a beer on the way home I'd have more invested than the car was worth!  So, of course, I did.

Hit a Dueces Wild Royal Flush on the poker machine that was worth a gallon of reducer after tips etc...

Now back to flaking off crappy old paint one chip at a atime....

GOLDARNIT I HATE AOL!!!!!!

Had a nice report of the days activities all written and sent and then these sods lost it.  The above were not the expletives I thought appropriate originally but I guess we'll go with that.

Got the Vette onto the horrible workstands this afternoon.  Two weeks ago I tried to give this hoist away cuz it's always in the way but now it's paying off.  The only thing it's good for is bodywork, the other 364 days it's just a trial!

I want to get from the doorlines forward all one colour before the holiday is over, we'll see.  I'm already starting to feel the pain of sanding.

I've done several of these marathons getting the work done in a short period and I always go back to work in pain.  MAybe I'll be smart enough to back off this time...Whatdya think?

I think it's typical of the breed, they attract yabbos with no money to spend on the upkeep.  The E-Types in the US went thru the same thing, a period of little value leading to little maintenance and much abuse.

For the time, effort and money I've put into this poor thing in the last years I could've, would've been better off with a new one.

But as they say, it's not the destination but the journey...

Don't forget Spitfires.

Quoted from GT6Steve

Isn't that the case with every classic car?
I could have bought a TR6 for the money "invested" in the spit.
Reminds me of the motto no-one ever seems to stick to: buy the best you can, it will be cheaper in the long run.
